Best Practices for Business: Employment Law Compliance, Including Georgia and Federal Immigration Requirements
Jennifer B. Sandberg, JD, Fisher & Phillips,LLP
Employment law compliance can seem like the speed limit on the freeway - it can be easy to ignore because we might not get caught. While many employers have never experienced any type of legal claim, government investigation, or union organizing activity, an employer never knows what tomorrow might bring. Being unprepared for employment law issues can result in expensive and time consuming consequences. Fortunately, employment law compliance is relatively easy and inexpensive. An employer just needs to "Be Prepared." In this session, we will discuss the basic elements of employment law compliance that can reduce the legal risks all employers face whether the employer has one employee or one thousand employees.

We will discuss best practices for hiring, background checks, work authorization verification, leaves of absence, discipline and termination. The work authorization verification section will include information of Georgia and Federal immigration law requirements as well as the use of E-Verify.

Jennifer Sandberg is a partner in the Atlanta office of Fisher & Phillips, LLP. She represents management in all areas of labor and employment law in state and federal courts as well as before state and federal agencies. Jennifer also manages the Firm's Electronic I-9 Solution program. This day-to-day advice includes conducting audits of human resource practices including I-9 compliance. She prepares employee handbooks and policies, conducts manager and employee training, and provides counsel regarding hiring, termination, unemployment, the Americans with Disabilities Act, wage and hour issues, the Family and Medical Leave Act, harassment, discrimination, garnishment, drug testing, and other federal and state laws and regulations affecting employment. Jennifer also advises government contractors on compliance with affirmative action and other contractor obligations and also assists them with audits.
